What a Voice Agent Actually Answers

We tracked every call a client's voice agent handled for a month. Here's what the data showed, and what it means for your operations.

One of our logistics clients was skeptical about voice agents. They'd tried chatbots before and the experience was poor, callers frustrated, hanging up, calling back on other lines. They wanted to see real data before committing.

So we tracked every call for the first month. Here's what the voice agent handled, in that one month, for one business:

317 calls were about delivery status. The caller wanted to know where their package was and when it would arrive. The voice agent looked up the tracking number in their system and read the status back. No human involved.

189 calls were appointment-related. Rescheduling, confirming, or canceling. The voice agent accessed the booking system, found the relevant appointment, and made the change or confirmed the time.

143 calls were about product or service information, store hours, pricing, availability, return policies. The voice agent had access to the knowledge base and answered directly.

78 calls were status updates from drivers or suppliers. Rather than calling the main line and interrupting the team, these were handled by the voice agent with a quick voice message logged into the system.

Total: 727 calls in one month. All handled without a human. Average handling time per call: 47 seconds.

What this didn't include: complex disputes, emotional calls, calls that required judgment. Those went straight to the team. The team stopped handling 727 calls a month and had more time for the calls that actually needed them.

The data is usually what convinces a skeptical owner. Not the promise of AI, the actual call log. If you're considering a voice agent, start by tracking your call volume for a week. Categorize every call by type. The ones that keep showing up are your automation candidates.
