Automate the Boring Stuff First

The most common mistake in automation projects is trying to automate the interesting problem. The right move is always the boring one.

When businesses come to us wanting to automate, they usually want to start with the most complex thing on their plate. The multi-step workflow that involves six tools and a dozen decision points. The thing that's been giving their team headaches for months.

We always push back. Start with the boring stuff first.

The boring stuff is the thing that happens every day, follows a predictable pattern, and doesn't require judgment. Data that moves from one place to another on a schedule. A report that gets generated every Monday morning from the same data sources. A notification that goes out when a specific event happens.

Why start boring

Three reasons.

First: boring automations have the fastest ROI. The return is immediate and measurable.

Second: boring automations are the easiest to build correctly. The patterns are clear, the failure modes are known, and the fix is simple.

Third: boring automations build confidence. When your team sees an automation work reliably, data moving correctly, every time, without being asked, they're more willing to trust the next one. And the one after that.

The complex automation, the one that involves six tools and twelve decision points, can usually be broken into boring pieces. Automate the pieces first. Once those are working reliably, the complex workflow becomes a chain of reliable steps rather than a fragile master system.

The automation first principle: automate what happens repeatedly, predictably, and without judgment. Save the complex for when you've built the habit of automation.
